NORCAL SETAC 2012 STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
Congratulations
to this year’s winners of the NorCal SETAC Research Scholarship Awards!
These are awarded to graduate and undergraduate students studying in the
environmental sciences, with a special focus on the fields of environmental
toxicology and chemistry. The applicants were asked to demonstrate their
potential to carry out research projects via a three to four page
proposal. We are happy to
present the winners of this year’s scholarships:
- Vanessa De La Rosa
working in Dr. Chris D. Vulpe's lab: Examining the Role of DNA Damage in
Trichloroethylene Renal Toxicity. Molecular Toxicology, Dept. of
Nutritional Science and Toxicology, University
of California, Berkeley ($2000).
- Nichole Johnston
working in Dr. George Bentley's lab: Effects of corticosterone-induced
stress on the stable isotope ratios of blood in European Starlings (Sturnus
vulgaris). College
of Natural Resources,
Department of Integrative Biology, University
of California, Berkeley ($1000).
NORCAL SETAC 2011 ANNUAL MEETING STUDENT AWARD RECIPIENTS
Several students submitted for student platform
and poster presentation awards at this year’s meeting. The quality
of work was exceptional from all students this year, leaving the Board of
Directors wishing we could provide monetary awards for all who
participated. However, we are pleased to announce the winners of this
year’s student presentation awards. Along with the receipt a cash award,
each student also received a year membership in both NorCal SETAC and SETAC
North America. Congratulations to all of this year’s participants!
Best Student Poster Presentations:
- XinXin Lin, University
of California, Berkeley.
Tie for best poster presentation award ($300). Poster titled, “The effects of
triphenyl phosphate on Daphnia magna”
- Jessica Charrier, University
of California, Davis.
Tie for best poster presentation award ($300). Poster titled, “Measuring the
oxidative potential of particles”
- Jackie Chan, University
of California, Davis.
First runner up poster presentation award ($150). Poster titled, “Combustion
derived ultrafine particles differentially alters metabolic and antioxidant
responses in neonatal and adult rats”
- Krista Callinan, University
of California, Davis.
Second runner up poster presentation award ($75). Poster titled, “A comparison
of mixture toxicity among common pesticides and aquatic contaminants”
Best Student Platform Presentation:
- Erika McKenzie, University
of California, Davis.
Best platform presentation award ($300). Talk titled, “Storm event associated
metals and implications of land use partitioning”
- Laurel Plummer, University
of California, Davis.
First runner up platform presentation award ($150). Talk titled, “Novel
source-oriented sampling and toxicity testing of urban particulate matter”
- Erica Fritsch, University
of California, Davis.
Second runner up platform presentation award ($75). Talk titled, “Triclosan
alters ryanodine receptor related pathways and swimming behavior in larval
fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas)”

to this year’s winners of the NorCal SETAC Research Scholarship Awards!
These are awarded to graduate and undergraduate students studying in the
environmental sciences, with a special focus on the fields of environmental
toxicology and chemistry. The applicants were asked to demonstrate their

proposal. We received 14 excellent proposals this year and are happy to
present the winners of this year’s scholarships:
- Lisa
Komoroske, University of California, Davis. Winner of the graduate scholarship
($2000). Proposal titled, “Physiological and population effects of oil in
marine turtles”. Faculty advisor, Dr. A. Keith Miles
- Caroline
Moore, University of California, Davis. Runner up for the graduate
scholarship ($2000). Proposal titled, “Caenorhabditis elegans: a novel
chronic exposure model to evaluate microcystin’s interference with
neurodevelopment”. Faculty advisor, Dr. Birgit Puschner
- Kevin
McPherson, University of Nevada, Reno. Winner for the undergraduate
scholarship ($1000). Proposal titled, “Effects of arsenic and arsenic
metabolites on L-type calcium channel and large conductance potassium channel activity
in vascular smooth muscle”. Faculty advisor, Dr. Jeff Angermann
